Drupal Camp India 2008

Almost like breaking traditions, the 1st ever Drupal Camp in India was organized at DAIICT, Gandhinagar from 8-9th August '08. Drupal Camp marked the beginning of uniting Drupal Community in India. DAIICT became the venue where Drupal Developers and Neophytes congregated to share, learn and collaborate about a technology called Drupal.

Drupal Camp, Gandhinagar, attracted large number of participants from across the country with an audience that was made up of 40% Drupal developers and 60% students. The camp saw participants coming from all corners of India, there were people from Srinagar, Pondicherry, Mumbai, Cochin, Pune, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad apart from Gujarat. Drupal camp also attracted professionals from different companies such SUN Microsystems, Satyam, TCS, Gloscon, OpenKick, etc. We also got participation from several companies and publishing houses who have interests in Drupal such as ITVidya, Ilaaka, Virtue Info, iKraftsoft, 84 Ideas, ElectroMech, Gujarat Hosting, Cignex etc.

Drupal Camp was structured into 2 different tracks namely Student Track and Developer Track. As was expected a large number of students turned up for the event and the student track had everything that the students could ever ask for.

The Student Track had sessions to educate and familiarize them with Drupal and Drupal community. Following were few sessions of this track.

  • "Getting Involved in Drupal Community" taken by Dheeraj Dagliya, Rajat Gupta and Roshan Shah of Gloscon Solutions, Ahmedabad.
  • "Installation and Configuration of Drupal 6" taken by Vijay Thummar.
  • "Theming in Drupal" taken by Ujval Shah of Gloscon and Shankar Dhanasekaran of Vedic Society, Chennai.
  • "Architecture of Drupal 6.0" taken by Dipen Chaudhary.

The Developer Track had more Technical, In depth and Innovative sessions for IT Professionals, Companies and Government bodies. Following were few sessions.

  • "Developing Modules for Drupal" taken by Peeyush Gulati of Satyam Computer Services Ltd.
  • "Factors to consider for effort estimate while building a Drupal Site" taken by Roshan Shah, Dheeraj Dagliya & Rajat Gupta of Gloscon Solutions.
  • "Drupal Best Practices" taken by Mir Nazim of IKraftSoft, Kashmir.
  • "Building Multilingual sites using Drupal" taken by Barinder Singh Saini and Dheeraj Dagliya of OpenKick Technologies, Ahmedabad.

Sujit Nair from SUN Microsystems presented a session on "Drupal on Solaris" and "NetBeans support on Drupal", Sujit informed the participants about SUN's initiatives to develop a Drupal plugin for NetBeans. "Open Source - Open Resumes" was another topic taken by Kedar Mehta from TCS, Gandhinagar. Nilesh Vaghela of ElectroMech gave a session on "Tuning between Linux and Apache server".

The event came to an end with all the participants, both developers and students, committing to organizing the next Drupal Camp in India with more enthusiasm.

A Code-sprint held at the Office headquarters of Gloscon Solutions where different developers came together to share & code their way to write test cases for Testing Framework available within Drupal. The participants also had discussion on how to create a new translation in Drupal.
